We found a butterfly that can be more easily seen in low levels of the Natural Park of Sierra Espuña.
Known by the common name of "blanquita of cabbage" or "cabbage butterfly, Pieris its scientific name is Rapae and belongs to the family Pieridae.
butterflies are small-medium size, ranging between 4 and 5 centimeters in size. The reverse of this butterfly has a greenish-yellow in color, with dark gray scales scattered, while the front is white.
The male differs from the female has dark blemishes on the front of the forewings. While in the male only one well defined circular spot in the female is clearly visible postdiscales two spots. Both male and female have dark spots in the apical area (end) of the forewings. If the specimen is at rest with closed wings like the case of the first picture is difficult to distinguish whether it is a male or a female.
This butterfly has several overlapping generations, with the months with the largest number of specimens in flight from March to April and October. Caterpillars feed primarily on cruciferous plants, can become pests of crops of radish and cabbage, from which it takes its common name. Spread throughout Europe, Asia and North Africa has been introduced accidentally into North America, Australia and New Zealand, where it has become a pest in the cultivation of certain plants.
