CAT'S CLAW (Sedum sediforme)

The "cat's claw , common name that is known in the area Espuña sediforme Sedum plant is fairly common in the natural park so it is easy to locate growing either in a forest clearing, under cover of other plants or even in rocky areas with little substrate where to expand their roots, the latter being the most common because it is photophilic. It is also common to see it grow on the roofs of older homes.
is a succulent plant or crass, that is, in this plant the leaves are thickened so that inside can store more water than other plants and can survive periods of drought.
This plant has an upright habit, reaching 30 centimeters in height, although flowering is higher than in stems reach a height of around 50 centimeters. The flowers are yellowish and appear in July and August on everything.
is sometimes used in gardens as an ornamental walls and rockeries.
Although as already pointed out in the Natural Park of Sierra Espuña known as "cat's claw" on Wikipedia are reflected many vernacular names: foot pappus, Pinilla, Pinilla alligator, evergreen, Sierra de Cazorla cat's claw, claw lizard, bird claw, bird claw, cat's claw, claws of a lion, moro rice ...
The shoot has been traditionally used for healing, to have the piperidine alkaloids. Boiled, is used to treat ulcers, inflammation and heartburn. With leaves and flowers make a soothing tea. We use the fresh plant.
young leaves are eaten raw or boiled and seasoned with oil and vinegar. Also consumed in brine accompanied by lemon juice and thyme pebrella. It is used to marinate the olives. However
its medicinal uses and / or cooking are taken from various internet sources, so its accuracy depends on the sources, with caution debiéndose information here poured.
We thank Jose Angel Campos, http://www.biodiversidadvirtual.org/ user for their help in accurate identification of this plant the attached photograph.

Another Interesting Story Life

This is a story that more than one can play, because many times we have not been angry with someone, and crowded for our misgivings, we prefer to stay in the senseless hatred, will be able to forgive.

There were once two brothers, Thomas and Javier, who lived across from one another in both houses of beautiful countryside. For small problems, which were becoming larger with time, the brothers stopped speaking and avoid crossing the road. One day he came to a house carpenter and asked one of the brothers if they would work for him. Thomas replied:

- You see that wood is close to that stream? Well, I've cut recently. My brother Javier lives in front and, because of our enmity, diverted the stream to separate permanently. So I do not want to see your home. I leave the task of making me a very close I avoid high front sight.

Thomas went to town and did not return until late at night.

Imagine his surprise when, instead of a fence, found that the man had done a beautiful bridge linking the two parts of the countryside. Unable to speak, he suddenly saw in front of his brother, who was then crossing the bridge with a smile:

-Thomas, my brother, I can not believe you have been you who has made the bridge, having been I who offended you. I come to apologize.

And the two brothers embraced. When Thomas saw that the carpenter was away, he said,

"Good man, how much do you owe? Why do not you stay?
"No, thanks," replied the carpenter. I have many bridges to build!

is more comforting embrace of reconciliation, a wall of resentment. Become

The body is definitely a great element of communication and the business card of every person. Therefore, personal image goes beyond the attire to be carried. WASP OF SPIDERS (Fam. Pompilidae)

The Pompilos are a family of Hymenoptera known to the common name "spider wasp" or "spider" wasp "in English. It is recalled that the Hymenoptera is an order of insects that include, among others, bees, wasps, bees and ants. Hymenoptera etymology refers to the Greek roots "hymen = membrane" and "ptero = wing," meaning that they have membranous wings.
aside the characteristics of the Hymenoptera in general we will focus on Pompilos.
owe their common name because most of them hunt spiders to feed their larvae. Wasps spiders have a wide repertoire of behaviors when preparing food for their offspring. Thus, most of which spurs the spider so that paralyzes him. However, while some simply lays an egg on the paralyzed spider, others literally drag their prey to their nest and once there the store to feed their young.
usually measure between 2.5 and 3.5 cm which gives them a menacing look to the naked eye, even when they reach 5 inches from the hornet (Megascolia maculata), which we saw in another post. The female wasp spiders are larger than males, as seen in the photographs attached. Predominantly black and red or orange although others may be present as yellow or white.
They have a long legs compared to other Hymenoptera and often walk nervously, making flights usually very short when compared with other wasps or bees with tireless.
While walking in search of prey tend to move the antennae and wings giving the impression to start flying, but without actually doing so usually. Even if they see threatened prefer to seek shelter in the bush before taking flight.

Blanquita COL BUTTERFLY (Pieris rapae)

We found a butterfly that can be more easily seen in low levels of the Natural Park of Sierra Espuña.
Known by the common name of "blanquita of cabbage" or "cabbage butterfly, Pieris its scientific name is Rapae and belongs to the family Pieridae.
butterflies are small-medium size, ranging between 4 and 5 centimeters in size. The reverse of this butterfly has a greenish-yellow in color, with dark gray scales scattered, while the front is white.
The male differs from the female has dark blemishes on the front of the forewings. While in the male only one well defined circular spot in the female is clearly visible postdiscales two spots. Both male and female have dark spots in the apical area (end) of the forewings. If the specimen is at rest with closed wings like the case of the first picture is difficult to distinguish whether it is a male or a female.
This butterfly has several overlapping generations, with the months with the largest number of specimens in flight from March to April and October.
Caterpillars feed primarily on cruciferous plants, can become pests of crops of radish and cabbage, from which it takes its common name. Spread throughout Europe, Asia and North Africa has been introduced accidentally into North America, Australia and New Zealand, where it has become a pest in the cultivation of certain plants.

Water Snake (Natrix maura)

We face a difficult reptile Espuña see for two reasons: first because of their shy and elusive character, and secondly by the increasing scarcity of wetlands in which to establish their habitat.
The water snake also known as viper snake is a snake of medium size, adults reaching about 70-80 inches long. Its scientific name is Natrix maura. In the pictures we see a young specimen, about 30-40 centimeters.
The color can vary from a few copies to others, but predominantly browns, green and olive. The design of the patches is striking because it is formed by a dark band in zig-zag on the back area. Some specimens show two parallel dark stripes that makes any confusion with the ladder snake. In the ventral side, the water snake has a characteristic arrangement checkered black and yellow spots.
As we mentioned, the habitat of these snakes is linked to the presence of water and wetlands, both natural (ponds, rivers, lakes ...) and artificial (irrigation ponds, reservoirs, canals ...).
Their presence or absence in a wet area will be given obviously by the existence of potential prey, mainly frogs. The younger specimens tend to feed on insects, small frogs, spiders ... hunting techniques of azecho or search. Larger specimens are more selective in their catch, increasing the size of prey with increasing size of the snake.
The period of activity of these snakes ranges from March to October. In spring and autumn are more active during the middle day, while in summer they do in the early morning and evening, even at night.
The water snake mimicry develops viper snakes (hence the epithet of forked). In addition to staining pattern that resembles snakes, when the water snake is disturbed, emits a grunt or hiss like a cat though weaker, while the body swell and deflate very showy. On the other hand curled his body and head clearly adopts a triangular shape, both of themselves and vipers. They can also secrete a foul liquid down the drain.
not attack people, but in the sporadic encounters with human beings tend to flee quickly to a hole or area of \u200b\u200bdense vegetation. Sometimes it can throw the head forward in a gesture of attack but still never bites, but merely to touch his head, without ever opening his mouth. It is not poisonous.
One of the easiest ways to differentiate them from snakes is by their pupils, while in the water snake pupils are round, in snakes the pupils are elliptical and vertical, as in cats. In any case, if in doubt, better not get too close to see the shape of the pupil.
Although not an endangered species, their distribution is shown impaired to be linked to the presence of water and wetlands.
to observe, the frogs tend to be our allies. If we hear frogs croaking in a pond or wetland area means that there are no predators, but if the frogs detect the presence of a water snake or other predator (including us) suddenly stop croaking and there is silence. So be patient and wait at a safe distance, adding to the ear until there is silence. Then we can get closer to the pond and with a little luck, a water snake.
Edit this entry to include new photographs of a specimen of Natrix maura at the time of the capture of a frog.

SPIDER CRAB (Thomisus onustus)

The spider crab (Thomisus onustus) is a relatively easy to see in the Natural Park of Sierra Espuña. We say relatively because of the abundance or scarcity of specimens, but because it is a camouflage expert.
These spiders may have different colors that change at will, from white to other more striking as the red, pink, orange or yellow color as the case of the attached photograph. It takes a couple of days to produce change.
The method of hunting these spiders is closely related to their color as they wait patiently for their prey in the same color flowers your body, so that they go unnoticed until they move to pounce on its prey. At that time they inject a poison that kills them. Their prey are usually bees, wasps and flies, among other insects that flock to the flowers. They do not build webs to capture prey.
These spiders get their common name not only in appearance that highlights the length of its two pairs of front legs and the shape of your abdomen, but also for their ability to move laterally as well as crabs do . Gender Thomisus
includes more than hundred different species, of which only two are present in the peninsula: T. citrinellus and T. onustus, which is pictured in this post.

BEETLE CHESS (trichodes leucopsideus)

We
against a beetle that is striking for its colors and design.
Although the design remains constant in trichodes leucopsideus coloration may have varying shades from yellowish orange copy of the photo to a reddish orange.
is distinguished from other specimens of the genus such as T. trichodes Apiarius, T. alvearius ... by design, easily distinguished by the two dark spots in front of the elytra, ie hardened outer wings that protect the interior and which are those used to fly.
beetles are small and medium-size are between 1 and 1.5 centimeters in length.
The adults usually perch on inflorescences of the plants, hoping to get some little insect to feed and seizing this moment to hunt. The copy of the photograph is perched on a thistle corridor ( Eryngium campestre ) while waiting patiently to get a kill.
gender
trichodes beetles are also known by the common name for bees beetle, because the females lay eggs in the nests of wild bees and other Hymenoptera and even beehives kept by man. After hatching, the larvae feed on the brood of bees.
Despite its striking coloration is often associated in nature to a warning sign for the presence of poison or toxicity, the fact is that it is a completely harmless animal that uses this strategy as a strong color deterrent from predators.
By contrast, the checkered beetle is very beneficial to man, especially in the field of agriculture, it helps in the pollination at the time that kills many insects that may be parasitic plants.
appreciate the help of Cecilia Montiel, http://www.biodiversidadvirtual.org/insectarium/ contributor in the identification of this insect.

Does Chlamydia Stay Dormant

digger wasp (Pryonix sp)

Sin embargo, lo que más llama la atención en el caso de Pryorix sp. gaster is the design and especially the length and thinness of the belt that joins the chest.
A characteristic of this wasp is its position, perched on a stem but completely upside down, as shown in one of the photos attached.
The common name of these wasps is due to the way they build their nests.
The digger wasp nests are usually found in areas provided with clear dry vegetation on the ground.
The female searches and carefully choose a place to dig their nests, which usually takes about 3 inches deep. Then capture prey, usually a grasshopper or a cricket, to paralyzing but not killing with its sting and it feeds into the nest. Finally lays an egg on the dam and carefully cover the entrance so that their future children with safe shelter and food for their development. Can occur between 2 and 3 generations per year.
Although larvae feed on insects that deposit their parent in the nest, adults feed on pollen and nectar from flowers, thus contributing positively to the pollination of crops, while limiting the development of pests.

Wedding Programs For Lutheran Wedding

RATCHET (Cicada barbara)

In Espuña is "crickets." In fact it is not common in these latitudes that refer to them as locusts, but always as cicadas. In neighboring populations that term is more common, especially among older people.
In any case we refer to the insects of the family Cicadidae and in the specific case of the photograph that accompanies Cicada barbara.
On the peninsula are present C. barbara, C. barbara subsp. and C. lusitanica orni. The best way to differentiate one species from another is by singing, as Cicada barbara continuous chirp while Cicada orni does intermittently. Besides the species C. orni is more common in the northern half of the peninsula, while in the southern half is more common Cicada barbara.
This insect belongs to the group of Hemiptera, which are recognized among other things by having an oral appliance in the form of "peak articulated." This peak is used to insert the stems and roots of plants and feed the sap, so suffer.
These insects are the males who sing his signature song while perched to attract females. They use a stridulatory apparatus located on the sides of first abdominal segment. The stridulatory apparatus consists of chitin-coated membranes called toms, and air bags that act as sounding boards. Each species gives its song to a different frequency and intensity. In the links at the bottom of the post I facilitated a link to a website where you can hear the calls of different types of insects of the family Cicadidae, including Cicada barbara and C. Orni, to appreciate differences.
The female cicada lays her eggs in holes in wood, usually of living trees, so when they hatch, the nymphs fall to the ground where they dig using their front legs swelled up to the roots of the tree or a plant adjacent which feeds by removing sap. Only emerge from their underground shelter to develop the adult stage and reproduce. Their life cycle can range from one to several years.
For this reason, the horn is considered a secondary pest especially in the cultivation of olives, which seems to have special predilection.

KING'S HEAD (Coronilla minima lotoides)

The King's crown is a Leguminosae plant that blooms from May to August.
usually occurs in areas supplied with dry brush or rosemary and thyme and dry soils associated with calcareous soils and poor, from a minimum altitude to 1100 meters. Lotoides subspecies can reach two feet in height, it is more robust than minimum Coronilla subsp. minimum. that hardly reaches 30 cm.
is a toxic plant, it just happens to digital, its seeds contain glycosides that act on the heart. Flowers formerly used in poultices to expel flatus. However, their use for medicinal purposes is completely discouraged.
Some of the websites consulted in the preparation of this article, Coronilla lotoides considered harmful to livestock, although it is said that usually serves as forage for it.

TIGRE SPIDER (Argiope lobata)

often referred to as Argiope lobata spider tigre ", mainly due to its yellow and black colors. However, the common name tiger spider is commonly used for both the genus Argiope spiders to the globular Scytodes, originally from Chile.
In the attached photo we see a ventral view (ie viewed from below) of Argiope lobata, taken in the vicinity of El Berro.
This spider is classified as araneomorphs because their chelicerae are arranged diagonally, unlike other spiders called Mygalomorphae, whose chelicerae are directed downward. (The chelicerae are mouth pieces that can be used to inject the poison and is located just outside the mouth).
Like many spiders, A. lobata has a large sexual dimorphism, the female being much larger than the male.
Their fabrics are very durable and generally reach up to 1 meter in diameter and often that the build between 2 plants nearby (often rosemary), so sometimes a clueless hiker hits her with the resulting shock and revulsion gesture.
Their sting, although not fatal unless it causes a reaction in the individual, it can be very painful.
edit this post to include a new picture dorsal view and in which there is also a male.

Lark (Lullula arborea)

The Lark is a bird that can be easily seen in open fields and areas bordering Sierra Espuña preferring Montebajo areas with few trees. The accompanying photographs were taken at the limits of the Espuña, between the hamlets of El Berro and alhameñas Gebas.
is very easy to identify because it has the characteristic ridge behind the head.
It feeds primarily on insects, some spiders and seeds and berries.
Her singing is a kind of "lu-lu-lu, very characteristic so it is not difficult to recognize even though we can not see the author.
