As its scientific name suggests, this orchid in the genus Ophrys, as well as other species that we saw in another post in this blog, Ophrys fusca.
Its common name, simpler than the scientist, varies depending on the area in which we find: wasp orchid flower wasp, bee, lilac bush, mosques vermelles ...
This plant varies in height, measured between 10 and 60 inches, with 2 tubercles. Presents 3-8 basal leaves bright green and 3-8 pins flowers appear between March and April. This species can have variations in flower color from white through various shades of pink to purplish pink.
Its distribution covers the English Mediterranean, southern France and Corsica in particular, but can also be seen in the rest of Europe. It grows between 850 and 1100 meters above sea level according to Wikipedia, although the copy of the photo attached growing with other a mere 500 meters, within the limits of the Natural Park of Sierra Espuña with Gebas Ravines.
Like other orchids, the flower of this plant mimics the shape and the smell of females of certain insects, so that males are attracted to it.
